About Osteopathy |
The Way I Work |

Osteopaths are practitioners who use their hands to
diagnose and treat dysfunctions in the body’s structural and mechanical
parts (including the soft tissues). These dysfunctions can arise
from, or cause symptoms in, tissues such as muscles, joints, nerves,
ligaments, tendons and fascia. In effect osteopaths deal with the
problems of the moving parts and scaffolding of the body.
Osteopaths are very aware that the structure and function of the
human body are inter-related, so that an altered structure, perhaps
due to habitual incorrect posture at work, or due to an accident,
can result in dysfunction in various parts of the body.
Osteopaths undergo a minimum four year full time training which
covers core medical subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry,
orthopaedics, neurology, psychology and pathology. We are also taught
conventional medical clinical skills such as taking blood pressure,
testing reflexes and carrying out other neurological examinations.
However, the distinctive aspect of osteopathic training in comparison
to medical training is the huge emphasis given to the learning of
observational and manual skills. For example, developing an understanding
of the palpation of soft tissues, the handling of joints and other
structures to assess their quality and their range of movement,
and to diagnose dysfunctions from that assessment.
