About Osteopathy |
The Way I Work |
What
I treat
|
 |
I use a variety of hands-on methods
in my treatments:-
Stretching and pressure techniques
.... ease tightened muscles and soft tissues. Articulation is
the gentle, repetitive and rhythmic induction of movement in stiffened-up
and dysfunctioning joints to improve their quality and range of
movement within their physiological range.
The ‘cranial approach’
.... identifies and balances mechanical
disturbances and limitations. This is a very gentle approach and
can help various problems in the joints of the skull, and throughout
the body.
Muscle energy techniques
.... loosen individual or groups of muscles, where the patient
plays an active role in the treatment.
Effleurage techniques
.... are used to drain fluids from the congested area in the periphery
toward the centre, from where they can be excreted through the
kidneys.
Connective tissue massage
.... is occasionally used to
stimulate blood flow to certain parts of the body; it is especially
useful for acute problems.
High velocity thrusts (HVTs)
.... are used occasionally to improve the range of one
or more restricted spinal joints. These are generally painless
and are usually followed by better functioning of the treated
area.
In addition to hands-on work I incorporate advice about posture,
exercise, life-style and relaxation. It is vital that patients
realise that in addition to the treatment I give them they have
an important part to play in their own recovery. Incorporating
the advice into their daily lives will supplement the treatment
administered and speed up recovery. I will do my utmost to help
each patient. However, if they do not implement the advice given
it is very likely that the benefit of any treatment given will
be compromised.
