Osteopathy was first established in 1874 by Andrew Taylor
Still, in Missouri, U.S.A. Dr. Still recognised that the body would
function better if it was mechanically and structurally sound. He
understood that the natural tendency of the body is to repair itself,
given the opportunity. He taught himself to feel (to palpate) tissues
and developed ways of removing barriers to healing, allowing the
body’s natural immunity to deal with problems and optimise function.
Dr. Still started Schools of Osteopathy in America. One of his pupils, Dr. J. Martin Littlejohn established the British School of Osteopathy in London in 1917. Since then various other Schools of Osteopathy have been established in the U.K., including the British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy (since renamed the British College of Osteopathic Medicine), The College of Osteopaths and The London College of Osteopathic Medicine. A major development in osteopathy was in 1993 when the Osteopaths Act became law, and Osteopathy became the first profession in complementary health care to be given statutory recognition. This led to the Statutory Register of Osteopaths by the General Osteopathic Council in 1998. Only those students able to show competency and safe practice are allowed onto the register.
